Holt Renfrew’s Square One shopping Centre location held its grand opening on Thursday, July 28th. The 130,000 square foot, three storey store is highlighted by distinct design features that include atriums with floor to ceiling glass windows, an open feature staircase and custom designed storefront glazing systems complete with 33’tall digital screens. The space also acts as a gallery for artwork by Toronto artist Harv Glaze but what sets it apart from other high end retailers is their H Project department. As part of their commitment to social responsibility, this specialty department offers artisan hand crafted products from around the world. The goal of H Project is to support culture and artisans while raising money for local and global charities. Patrons can choose from over 200 designer brand names like Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Moncler and Burberry. Of the three floors, one of them was specifically designed for Holt Renfrew’s exclusive clientele. A place referred to as “The Apartment”, clients can ‘experience’ the comforts of home while personal shoppers tend to their whims. A truly spectaculr space, we must applaud all the efforts of the Holt Renfrew project team. To view our project, click here.

Safety has always been paramount at Govan Brown and we have an impeccable safety record to prove it. We have dedicated Health & Safety Officers in every office who ensure that everyone working on site has the proper training to help maintain safety on our project sites. Our Safety personnel are always updating themselves with new certifications and designations and this includes our newest Certified Red Cross Instructor Jake Mathies. Jake joined Govan Brown in the summer of 2015 as a Health & Safety Coordinator in the Toronto office. In 2016, after completing a grueling 40-hour instructors’ training program, Jake was awarded CPR Instructor certification. As a result, Govan Brown is now officially a training partner of the Canadian Red Cross. This will allow Govan Brown to offer its own in house First Aid training on site starting this fall. It has always been Govan Brown’s main priority to ensure our employees and all project participants are up to date on emergency protocol and safety standards. Jake’s certification is another step forward for Govan Brown becoming the safest construction firm in Canada. Congratulations Jake and thanks to all of our H&S team for helping make Govan Brown a safer environment.
On March 16th, our Simons' team celebrated the completion of Simons’ flagship store (in Square One shopping centre) by having a party the day before the grand opening of the space. The gala was attended by the entire project team including consultants, trades and industry insiders. The store is comprised of 110,000 square feet over two floors that are connected by a feature staircase flanked by an illuminated wall. This location is the second to be built by Govan Brown; the first being in Park Royal shopping centre in Vancouver in 2015 with a third and fourth location in Calgary and Edmonton, respectively.
On Friday, March 6th, the much anticipated Nordstrom store opened its doors in Ottawa’s Rideau Centre. The 157,000 square foot store includes all of the latest Nordstrom design concepts, including an abundance of natural light, luxurious stone and carpeted floors. Ceiling treatments include both warm wood ceilings and drywall clouds suspended from an open structure that glow with light. The eBar Cafe opens directly on the mall, while the second floor Bazille restaurant and Bar overlooks a dining terrace complete with umbrellas and heaters. The Nordstrom facade, facing the Mackenzie King Bridge was transformed into a sleek, tiled and glazed facade complete with a glazed canopy. Much of this style can be seen throughout the design of the opulent store. Crowds gathered for the pre-grand opening "Beauty Bash"; a celebration that included a live band, breakfast, complimentary beauty makeovers and free samples. Doors opened at 9:30 am. The Nordstrom Rideau location was the first of three Nordstrom stores built by Govan Brown.
